In Year 5 we have lots of fun, creative topics that the children look forward to.
Our study of an early civilisation, based on Ancient Egypt, always proves to be very popular especially as the children find out about the process of mummification and discover how the Egyptians lived by looking at the evidence from Tutankhamen’s tomb.
When we look at the region of Merseyside, in Geography, the children discover the physical and human features by looking at maps and from internet research. We also look at famous artists and architects from Liverpool and try to imitate their work. On our school trip we enjoy learning about the history of Liverpool and viewing these famous landmarks for ourselves!
Also, we use maps extensively to look at the local area and note the changes that have taken place to the geographical area over time. We go on fieldwork trips to look at famous places in our local area and use maps to plan our routes. We try to find out about famous local people in our area from the past and present.
We also enjoy reading some stories by famous authors such as Roald Dahl. Everyone loves stepping into the roles of the five lucky Golden Ticket winners and writing about chocolate! After studying ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ in English, we even have a dressing up day!
The children particularly enjoy the role play when we look at the traditional story of ‘Oliver’ by Charles Dickens as we look at how the language and lifestyle has changed since that era of time. We link this in with a study of food where we love making classic dishes with produce from our local area.
